A denture is a dental appliance that replaces missing teeth and restores your smile. Dentures are custom-made to fit your mouth and match your natural teeth. A denture is removable and can be taken out and cleaned.
There are different types of dentures available, including full and partial dentures. Your dental team can decide which kind is best for you.
When teeth are missing, the surrounding teeth will begin to shift. This can cause your bite to become misaligned, causing problems with your chewing or with your speech. This can be resolved with the help of dentures. It can both improve the appearance of your smile and help restore your dental health.
There are three types of dentures available:
- Full dentures
- Partial dentures
- Over-dentures
The full and partial dentures are removable, while the top overdentures are secured on top of dental implants.
If it’s time for you to get dentures, you’ll want to be sure you’re ready for them to replace your natural teeth. Here are a few things to consider:
- You probably won’t be able to speak properly at first. It will take time for your mouth to adjust.
- You’ll probably need to practice eating. Chewing will be more difficult for you at first.
- You’ll want to speak with your dentist about any soreness or pain you experience.
- You’ll want to practice cleaning your dentures. Your dentist can give you some pointers on cleaning them properly.
Your teeth may be sensitive or sore after dentures are fitted. Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how to care for your dentures. These instructions will include advice on cleaning, soaking and inserting or removing your dentures.
Don’t use regular toothpaste to clean your dentures. Instead, ask your dentist for recommendations on denture cleaners. Denture cleaners are formulated for use with dentures. Using regular toothpaste on your dentures can cause them to become discolored and lose their shape.
